The GOP’s Moral & Policy Contradictions
The GOP’s moral and policy contradictions are losing elections everywhere. Since the landmark Supreme Court decision Roe vs Wade in 1973, abortion has been a contentious issue in American politics. Over the years, many elections have been impacted by candidates’ positions on abortion rights. Reproductive rights will continue to be a significant political issue in society. The fight for abortion access continues to be a contentious issue in many state and federal elections.
The Republican party’s decision to ban abortions in several states across the US has drawn sharp criticism and backlash from various quarters. In many states controlled by Republicans, abortion is banned without exceptions for rape or incest, which can lead to devastating consequences. For instance, on June 30, 2022, a ten-year-old girl in Ohio became pregnant as a result of incest. The state government denied her an abortion, forcing her to travel across state lines to seek medical care. Unfortunately, such cases are not uncommon, with thousands of similar incidents happening each year.
Since the overturn of Roe v Wade, Republicans have lost a series of elections back-to-back, with no end in sight. It is essential to recognize the harmful impact of these restrictive abortion laws on vulnerable individuals and advocate for access to safe and legal abortion for all. Republicans still stubbornly remain in their eco chambers. It is no secret they have long been opposed to abortion. However, their unwavering stance on the issue has proven to be a political death knell for the party.
The anti-abortion laws, in some states, also stipulate those physicians who perform abortions on patients to save lives shall be jailed. This is an unimaginable scenario where doctors who have sworn to protect lives are being punished for saving them. These draconian and emotionless measures by Republicans are not only brutal but also undemocratic. However, it’s important to remember that banning abortions does not eliminate the need for them but rather endangers the lives of women who seek them.
Republicans are not learning their lesson when it comes to the issue of abortion. The GOP’s unwillingness to reassess its position on abortion has contributed to its electoral losing streak. Republicans knew the potential consequences of their stance, but they jumped to the death knell without taking any precautions. If they continue on this path, they will only lose elections.
The GOP, however, maintains that their stance aligns with their pro-life values and seeks to protect the unborn. Even GOP-leaning female voters in suburban areas disagree as they reportedly vote en-masse to enshrine abortion in their state Constitution. This trend has been observed even in ruby-red states such as Kentucky, Ohio, Virginia, and others. The anti-abortion laws have been viewed as a direct attack on women’s reproductive rights and have sparked outrage among those who support safe and legal access to abortion. This latest development highlights the growing divide between the Republican party and female voters, particularly in suburban areas.
The anti-abortion stance is not a winning proposal for the GOP. The party prides itself on advocating for small government and individual liberties, yet when it comes to women’s reproductive rights, they seem to contradict their beliefs. How can the party justify advocating for less government intervention in people’s lives when it comes to taxes but not when it comes to women’s decisions to have or not have a baby? This contradiction is a fundamental flaw in the GOP’s stance on abortion.
Additionally, there is the issue of providing government benefits to women who are forced to have children but then refuse the same benefits to raise their kids, especially if they are poor and cannot fend for the babies. These contradictions and inconsistencies are not lost on the American people, and it is time for the GOP to reconsider their stance on abortion if they want to remain a relevant political party.
