An Open Letter To Speaker Mike Johnson
Dear Hon. Mike Johnson:
We are deeply concerned about the growing division in our nation and the erosion of our faith in democracy. The current political situation in Congress demands an urgent call for bipartisan cooperation, and it requires that both parties unite and strive for middle-of-the-road solutions that benefit all Americans. As the possibility of a government shutdown looms, all elected officials in Congress must prioritize working together, as failure to do so will further divide our nation, erode our faith in democracy, and ruin our economy.
In a divided government, all parties must work together to achieve the best possible outcomes for their constituents, recognizing that in a country with two major political parties, neither Party can enact all its policies without considering the views and needs of the other Party’s voters. It is a political delusion to assume otherwise.
The reality check: Your Party only controls the House of Representatives; the ruling Party controls the Senate and White House. So, there is no way any partisan bills passed by the House would ever become law without the support of the other Party. So, why waste time and energy? Our nation needs leaders committed to putting aside partisan differences and working together for the greater good. Therefore, your leadership is critical in creating an amiable atmosphere for effective lawmaking for the benefit of all Americans.
We urge you to use your position to encourage your fellow lawmakers, particularly in your Conference, to work together in a bipartisan manner. As people’s representatives, you must put aside all political differences and focus on finding common ground. We hope you take this call to action seriously and lead the charge to assemble bipartisan efforts. Our nation is counting on you to prioritize cooperation and compromise over partisanship.
Sincerely yours,
